DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2021\, The Armenian Bioinformatics Institute (ABI) i
s a research institute\nfocused on the development and application of comp
utational data analysis\nmethods to human\, plant\, and bacterial genomics
.\n\nLike any other research institute\, ABI needs servers to compute\, st
orage to\nstore and networking to connect systems and data together.\n\nWh
ile initially everything was a "house of madness" with mix of VMs on the\n
cloud\, bare-metals with single user authentication and duct-taped network
ing\,\nthe IT team decided to move everything to a FreeBSD backbone\, with
bhyve for\ncomputing and data saved on ZFS.\n\nIn this talk we explore ho
w we use FreeBSD in bioinformatics\, how jails and\nZFS help us to maintai
n our infrastructure and critical\, original data\,\nstories of issues we
had over the last year (during my time)\, experiments in\nthe last 2-3 yea
rs (before my time)\, issues the lab encountered (before our\ntime) and pr
oblems we see till this day.\n\nThe talk also has a list of software that'
s needed by bioninformatics field\nwhich are lacking on FreeBSD\, bhyve/ja
ils suggestions that would make our\nlives easier and problems we encounte
red while trying to setup a FreeBSD-only\nHPC environment.
