I've written many open source tools that nobody's heard of, and a more modest few that stuck around. When not being pedantic about using Dq or Qq for quotes in manpages, I'm either diving or in the mountains.

In 1972, Ken Thompson added a script to Version 2 AT&T UNIX: "locate and run off a particular section of this manual". This tool, "man", closed the loop for computer system documentation, allowing it to be distributed, developed, and accessed within the same system---and all with one set of simple tools.
How does this tooling look, 54 years later?
In this talk, I'll survey both the manpage and other popular documentation ecosystems. I'll then look at what modern tools are available for manpages, and how we can lower the barrier of entry for new documentation into the system.
