DESCRIPTION:Modern computers are collections of heterogenous components\, i
ncluding GPUs\, TPUs\, NPUs\, FPGAs and other devices that carry out compu
ting tasks but which are not the central CPU. We are proposing novel metho
ds of program compilation\, transformation and scheduling that take advant
age of the entire system so that computation takes place in the most appro
priate place at the most propitious time. Using LLVM IR\, optimizers\, and
a performance aware scheduler\, we can maximize utilization while reducin
g execution times for arbitrary workloads\, freeing developers from treati
ng modern computers as if they were fixed function platforms. This researc
h has applications in high performance computing\, embedded systems and se
curity due to the centrality of run time program transformation in our sys
tem. We present our results thus far from work on FreeBSD CURRENT\, includ
ing updates to both the performance monitoring system (hwpmc) and a new sc
 heduler based on performance counters.
